For the first time since 2005, the two teams with the best record in the NBA played each other on Christmas Day. It lived up to all the hype. These teams showed why they have the best records in the NBA and why they are the two best teams in general. The Suns and Warriors showed they both are incredibly deep, have fluid offense, and can lock down on defense. It was easily the best game of the day and had to be fun for everyone to watch, not just fans of the teams.
The only issue is, the Phoenix Suns lost. The team known for coming up big in clutch time minutes faltered in clutch time. The Suns never scored again after making it 107-109 with 2:43 left in the game. The Warriors ended the game on a 7-0 run and that was the end.
Steph Curry did Steph Curry things as he ended the game with 33 points and 5 three pointers. Most of which coming at the most opportune time for the Warriors. Chris Paul did his best with 21 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds. Unfortunately, it was not enough to pull the Suns to victory. Devin Booker had a dud of a game. He went 5-19 from the field for only 13 points in his Christmas Day debut.
The result of the game is not as important as what the game showed the entire NBA. We are still over a month from the trade deadline and months away from the playoffs. A whole lot can change until these games really count. However, this game put the entire NBA on notice that the Suns and Warriors are in a league of their own. They are clearly the two best teams in the NBA. They have super star players, they play defense, they can score at ease, and they are both incredibly well coached.
What the NBA needs and what the NBA fans deserve is a Western Conference finals matchup between these two teams in June. With Klay Thompson coming back for the Warriors there is bound to be some adjustment period. While we are over 30 games into the season, these teams have shown that they are the best. Everyone else in the West and the East is playing in a second tier.
Although it would have been nice to notch a Christmas Day win under their belts, the Suns have to be happy with where they are while continuing to be hungry for their main goal. The goal of making up for this past July and winning an NBA championship.
